Before you even start packing, you can lighten up your load and reduce any storage space you need to rent by having a 'go finish' sale.
On the day, keep your pets out of packing boxes and away from all activity. Moving will distress them, and they could leave home before you do! So keep them locked up in one room.
Use the right boxes, nad pack them carefully. Professional moving companies use only sturdy, reinforced cartons. The boxes you can get at the super markek might be free, but they are not as strong or padded, and so can't sheild your valuables as well from harm transit.
Use sheets, blankets, pillows and towels to seperate pictures and other fragile object from each other and the side of cartons. Pack plates and glass objects vertically, rather then flat and stacked.
Be sure to mark carefully and thoroughly the boxes in which you've pack fragile items, especially if those items are exceptionally valuable.
The mover will advise you weather those valuables need to be repacked in sturdier, more appropriate boxes.
The heavier the item, the smaller the box should occupy. A good rule of thumb is if you can't lift the carton easily, its to heavy. Label your boxes, especially the one containing sheet and towels, so you can find everything you need the first night in your home.
Fill an "OPEN ME FIRST" carton containg snacks, coffee or teabags, kettle, tioletry items (make sure caps are tightly secured), cleaning items, flashlight, screwdriver, pliers, cups and utensils favourite toys for the kids, and any other items your family can't do without. Once at your new home, allow the fridge to stand for a couple of hours before plugging it in.
